In Trouble Returns, middle-grade author Nancy Oswald brings eleven-year-old Ruby, donkey Maude and the cat aptly named Trouble together once more in real-life Cripple Creek, Colorado. Set in the late 1890’s after historical fires devastated the buildings of the gold-mining town, Oswald’s protagonist Ruby is thrown into the fray of a town tripping over itself to discover the meaning of so many fires (is it arson? is it something more sinister?) and the person(s?) behind it.
Trouble Returns picks up during the reconstruction of Cripple Creek, but also places Ruby in Colorado Springs where she must take the stand in the trial for her nemesis, Jake Hawker. Beyond that troubling scenario, Ruby’s also in trouble with a number of people: her Pa, her future step-mother, her cat and her school. Will Ruby ever get out of trouble?
Published by Filter Press in April 2017, Trouble Returns is the third installment of the Ruby & Maude Adventure series. It should be noted that all three books can be read out of order and independently. Trouble Returns is also the winner of a 2017 Spur Award and a 2017 finalist for a Colorado Author’s League Award.
